Reconomy Connect and Balfour Beatty partner to support the Krizevac Project in Malawi, Africa!
We recently supported our client, Balfour Beatty, with a construction project in Reading, to help find a reuse solution for material deliveries packaged in geotextile layers with aluminum foil sheets.
While Balfour Beatty initially reached out to local community gardens and charities, the sheer volume (approximately 7,000m³) was too large for them to manage. That’s when our Circularity Team, leveraging their extensive network, suggested the Krizevac Project, a charity based in Stoke. The Krizevac Project is now working to repurpose this material by shipping it to Malawi, where it will contribute to the construction of schools, nurseries, and universities. It was a fantastic team effort as Balfour Beatty also provided the one tonne bags and the logistics to move the material from the site in Reading to the charity in Stoke.
Holly Baker, Environmental Sustainability Advisor at Balfour Beatty, commented: “Circular economy and sustainability are hugely important to us at Balfour Beatty. We’re thrilled that the donated materials have found a new home for a great cause— helping to build nurseries, schools, and universities in Malawi. Thanks to the team at Reconomy Connect for connecting us with the Krizevac Project charity.”
Zoe at Krizevac Project has said “We’ve just received a generous donation of geotextiles! This essential fabric will play a crucial role in laying the foundation for our new construction project. We’re about to begin building a secondary school for boys along with hostel facilities, with 60% of places allocated for bursary students, supporting the most disadvantaged in Malawi.”
Jamie Roberts, Divisional Director for Construction, Housing & Infrastructure at Reconomy Connect added. “This really does demonstrate a true partnership and the importance of networks to unlock opportunities to treat waste as a resource. This example drives what could have been considered waste up the hierarchy for reuse whilst also delivering community impact. We all have an important part to play in improving circularity in construction and being more resource efficient.’’
We are proud to have worked with Balfour Beatty to find a closed-loop solution and prevent unnecessary waste disposal.
